Special Counsel

Andrea is an experienced and well-regarded employment law specialist.  She has worked across all areas of employment law and is a trusted advisor to individuals and organisations in the public and private sectors.

Andrea works with clients to navigate complex and challenging employment situations.  She regularly advises on performance management and disciplinary processes.  Andrea advises on change processes, and has been involved in significant processes involving the establishment and disestablishment of public entities, and the transfer of functions between entities in the public sector.  Andrea advises on employment and contractor arrangements, agreements and policies.  She also advises about collective agreements and bargaining, industrial relations including strikes, lockouts and suspension, and has been involved in facilitation in the Employment Relations Authority. Andrea has been involved in significant regulatory compliance projects, including Holidays Act remediation involving the Labour Inspectorate.

Andrea represents clients in raising and responding to personal grievances and other employment claims.  She has a track record of resolving issues at an early stage, often without the need for formal litigation.  She is skilled in negotiations and regularly represents clients at mediation. If litigation is necessary, she represents clients in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court (including in a test case about good faith).  She has also appeared in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal, as well as before other tribunals and decision-making bodies.

Andrea enjoys the dynamic nature of employment law, and the human aspects of employment issues.

Andrea is an Association of Workplace Investigators Certificate Holder (AWI-CH) and has completed a number of independent workplace investigations involving complex and serious matters for private and public sector clients.

Prior to joining Black Door Law, Andrea worked in the litigation and employment teams at two of New Zealand’s largest law firms, which included a secondment at a large Government Department.

Outside of the Firm, Andrea is passionate about gardening and growing flowers. She enjoys spending time with her family, and assisting with her children’s sport at the netball court, pool and beach for surf lifesaving. Andrea also enjoys eating good food, travel, baking, and exploring new handcrafts.
